Cycling in El Paso/Juarez is still a ‘green idea’
EL PASO — Methods of transportation are constantly evolving, in hopes of improving air quality and congestion. One increasingly popular alternative to driving in many urban centers across the country is cycling, and El Paso is embracing the trend in fits and starts. Recently, the El Paso Metropolitan Planning Office (MPO) approved a budget to help partly fund phase one of a citywide Bike Share program.

Business leaders Paul Foster and Wes Miller, along with city officials and the public kicked off a three-day open house Friday morning for the new Fountains at Farah pavilion shopping center in central El Paso. EL PASO – Juliana Jimenez was shaved bald after giving herself a terrible haircut when she was five years old. At 17 she sprouted gray hair, which prompted her to start applying color. After that, she regularly cut, colored and styled her own hair. The youngest of eight children, she says she was just trying to distinguish herself from her siblings.

EL PASO – This border city is well known for being charitable, especially when the holidays roll around, but El Paso has been hit hard by the weakened national economy, which means that community volunteering and donations are on a decline even though there is a greater need than ever. Nonprofit organizations such as the West Texas Food Bank, the Rescue Mission of El Paso and the Salvation Army need plenty of donations and volunteers year round, not only during the holiday season.

Lucia Quiñonez is a graduate from the University of Texas at El Paso. She attained a bachelors degree in multimedia journalism with a creative writing minor on December 2013.

Even though she is able to work on a wide range of topics she is interested on local issues, immigration, environmental, and education reporting.

She is able to contribute as print/online reporter, and as a photojournalist.

She previously interned at Newspaper Tree, a non-profit online news organization and was a reporter for Borderzine, UTEP’s student online magazine.

Quinonez understands the business aspect of media. In the past, she worked at the El Paso Times and El Diario of El Paso, in advertisement and circulation.

She is a member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ).

She plans to pursue a master’s degree in the near future.
